Popular Birthday Photoshoot Themes

When it comes to birthday photoshoots, some popular themes I often see in my own photography are elegant, sophisticated, feminine, dark, girly, and playful. But these shoots are also personalized and unique to each client. Cakes often make an appearance to showcase the celebratory aspect of things. In the past, I've seen some creative themes like the sexy but sweet and seductively alluring 21st birthday photoshoot with champagne, popping bottles, and a mix of black, white, and gold colors. There's also the dark feminine theme, which is extremely seductive, intoxicating, and leans towards artwork that both men long for and women dream about. Being the photographer, the creator, and working alongside my clients to create something that encapsulates who they really are is powerful. Photographing them in the depth of who they are is something very special.

The Pittsburgh Photography Community

As a photographer based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, I think we have something unique that other cities might not have, and that's a strong sense of community. I love that we can have our family and friends help with these shoots. Personally, I've had a lot of my family help me with shoots, and it's been the light of my life to see my mom and cousins get involved. The final creations are always rewarding for everyone. Pittsburgh offers some beautiful scenery for birthday photoshoots. Recently, I had a couple book me to shoot at the Point in Pittsburgh, as well as a Grand View overlook. Both locations turned out to be perfect, resulting in some of my favorite couple/birthday photos I’ve ever done. The photos turned out spectacular.

Choosing the Right Location and Timing

When it comes to choosing the right setting and location for a birthday photoshoot, I think this is the most pivotal part. It's really important for a photographer to have recommended locations set for clients. If clients recommend locations, it's helpful to have the photographer scout in advance to know exactly what to expect. Showing up early to scout the location and determine the best spots for shooting helps everything run smoothly. Being mindful of the weather and lighting is also crucial. I never recommend shooting at 12 PM; I always suggest shooting three to five hours before sunset for the best lighting. For a more somber, melancholy, or dreamy and dramatic effect, shooting at blue hour is recommended.

Studio vs. Outdoor Photography

As a photographer, I have my favorite places to shoot. In the past few years, I've been honing my skills in the studio, focusing on fundamentals and technical aspects. Studio shooting has always been the centerpiece of my heart. I used to work for Lori Dorman Photography based in Los Angeles as a photographers assistant, which was a pivotal moment in my career. It shaped the way I wanted to create, the feelings I wanted my clients to leave with & fueled my love for the art of studio shooting.

Celebrating Major Milestones

Breaking down the major ages of our lives that us women often want to document: 16, 18, 21, 30, and 40. These are the most popular ages people want to celebrate and cherish forever. At 16, I imagine cakes, playfulness, and lots of colors, depending on the client's style. At 18, you're finally legal, which is a monumental moment even though you can't drink yet.  At 21, we celebrate with alcohol, champagne, and popping bottles. At 30 and 40, we celebrate a woman's prime, showcasing her sexy, seductive side, and all the wisdom she has to offer. My favorite props include wine glasses, wine bottles, cakes, cake holders, and picnic blankets, tailored to the client's style.

Personalizing the Photoshoot

Incorporating a client's personal style and interests into their birthday photoshoot usually starts with a consultation call. This helps me understand their needs and how they want to personalize the shoot. We discuss color schemes and what suits them best. Often, clients either ask me to create a vision board or send me their own Pinterest boards. Finding inspiration for new and creative photoshoot ideas comes from various sources, including Pinterest, Instagram, TikTok, and my favorite celebrities' styles. I love theme-based photoshoots, theatrical elements, drama, and old Hollywood glamour.

Preparing for the Photoshoot

To help clients prepare for their photoshoot, I put together a photoshoot prep guide/welcome packet, outlining what to expect, how long the session will be, and how it will run. This helps the session run smoothly and allows for creative flexibility. Making the photoshoot experience enjoyable and memorable for clients is important to me. I go above and beyond to ensure they are comfortable, at ease, and having fun. By the end of the session, they feel confident, like they're on top of the world, and receive photographs that make them feel even more confident, showcasing the essence of who they are.

Whether you're planning an elegant, playful, or uniquely themed session, capturing these special moments is a joy and a privilege. If you're ready to book your personalized birthday photoshoot or have any questions, I'm here to help make your vision come to life. It’s time to turn your birthday moments into art you’ll always remember!
